Sister Monica Heeran has stepped down twice as executive director, but she has always been board chair of Volunteers In Medicine, convening a group of physicians, business people and community members in the 1990s to organize a truly free clinic. People who know Sister understand why she can step down as chair — but not step away from VIM altogether. She will remain on the board, guiding the organization and working with the new chair, Duncan McDonald, a board member and a professor at the University of Oregon.
